TAKE ME TO CHURCH – HOZIER

Sexuality…hmm *Deep breathe*

“I have no reason to point a finger at lovers of the same sex or get involved in the preferred bedroom business of people.” I have said this to myself a million times but with each day it gets harder to ignore the subjects of homosexuality, transgender issues and every other upcoming sexual “cool” of this world. It aches me seeing young and old people getting into a culture they fancy from a mile but do not know of the consequences or the truth behind such lifestyles. I respect the sexual decisions made by many but do they have the truth at the back of their minds or are they just money driven decisions that are made in the happy and fun times?  Binyavanga’s Wainaina’s missing chapter of the book One day I will write about this place left me speechless!  (The comments section even more perplexed!). I recently caught Lavern Cox’s The T word show on MTV and I must admit the entire running had my jaw on the ground! I was and I am still speechless about the show.

Sexuality matters are too private to be discussed; a piercing feeling of rage and confusion gives me a tongue-tie making it impossible to word my thoughts on sexuality. This song made me look for the hidden meaning of it. What ran through Hozier’s mind giving such great melody to words written in plain alphabet but filled with so much meaning? The melody is so great and catchy and before watching the video then further getting the meaning I had a superficial translation to it; lining up rows of metaphorical interpretations that were not so off but very superficial. Take me to church By Hozier.”  …. Take me to church I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies...”  Art has the bliss of breaking laws and provoking emotion via the gift of mixing extremes of words in one phrase.

Away from the song, I wondered, was the church the origin of all this? Did it all start from laws that limited many from living life and instead hid in a faith; exploring their animalistic thoughts and eventually manifesting their inevitable human desires on the next person, then the feeling got better with time and it’s now a lifestyle? I do not know… all I know is that societies have considered it special and some even cool as of the 21st century. The lyrics are catchy the meaning even wilder and I had to keep it somewhere safe on here.

My lover’s got humour
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
Should’ve worshipped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She’s the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
Fresh poison each week
“We were born sick,” you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me worship in the bedroom
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

[Verse 2]
If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

[Bridge]
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen. Amen. Amen

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

WEEKENDS OF PLAYS!

Happy May! Happy 2nd half of the year!

There are days when you really have to get down and write something because you need to meet your target as a writer. These are the days when nothing happens for me despite having so much content from my day to day activities. I then decide to let it be until when I feel I can do something but sometimes this goes on for days and the feeling is bad. I have been up to some great stuff in the past month and this year has come with a lot of blessings I must say. Thankful 🙂

I am a proud Kenyan and in the past few years the world has had to feel our presence in many great achievements. One of the best that happened was the Grammy win by Lupita Nyongo earlier this year. That was epic! I remember her from Shuga Season one particularly on this scene where she was having a thing with her older married boss after hours in the office. I do not know if ya’ll remember but she was brilliant in Shuga 1. Many actors from that set have awesome careers and are stars in their own ways right here at home and in the world over. Currently Sumu la Penzi and Kona are my best Kenyan T.V series. ‘Sumu la penzi’ portrays the lifestyle of some of the dangerous women of this city and truly that is what happens. You only need to live off of your beauty and invest in it big just so to get that life. Several girls i’ve met have their beauty working for them. Life is all glam and even better than what many other girls do everyday just so to make 30000 – 60000 Kshs per month (400-700USD) which  is weave money to a beauty somewhere! We have talent in Nairobi we are big. Kona is a great Family series the blend in family values sports-boxing and relationships is perfect you do not get bored watching. In all these creations several actors continuously feature in them and I was thrilled to watch Dangerous affairs, a play staged at Alliance Francaise one of the evenings last month crossing to early May. The reason why I really went for this play was so to see whether Brenda Wairimu was great off T.V.  Simply, what was she like on stage? She has been in Changing Times, Shuga, Mali …oh I love Mkamzee Mwatela in Mali, just to get off track a bit STAY! Did you know that one of the minds behind this series is 23 Years old! One of my random reads brought this to light and I wish I could remember her name (google did not help) but Stay is super hilarious. Mkamzee Mwatela is a big shot in Kenyan acting. Her character is so believable and I always believe she is just as bad ass and lovable in real life 😉 .

Dangerous affairs, the play was set to run for two weekends and I had to get an early booking for the first showing. My friend and I met up at six pm at Alliance Fransaice and 20 min into the hour the play was way gone. I had to save my Kay stories for later. FCA plays are strict on timings – good job!  I was wowed by everyone in the play and BRENDA was so BOBO! Bobo is this domestic assistant who is good at her job, she will tell you everything and says nothing depending on the money you offer. Juma Williams had so many notes to part with in this one plus he was a fast learner. She knew everything in that house. Bobo was called over and over – do this, do that, do this, do that just like Agege from Aminata and she always was glad to answer “Yes Madam!” with that awesome sexy Swahili diction. She was the game sneaking a Brandy to the man of the house, Robert Agego, who was not allowed to drink due to medical reasons as well as his wife. It’s a wonder how Rosemary Waweru was able to hold the sneer on her face for that long …acting is a serious job.  The cast was brilliant and we were cracked by the amazing triplets! I was sold at some point thinking they were actually three of them. The deeply rooted Kao guy, the painter, and the Nigga from eldy performed by Mwaura Nganga! You know the rich man’s daughter, Janet Kirina, eyed one of the triplets and ended up having all of them at different occasions she definitely scored. 😉 The drama went on and in the end no-one really got to sign the documents and I would love to watch a second part of it. Mbeki Mwalimu and Veronica Waceke did a brilliant job with this FCA production.

Dangerous Affairs had so much more to offer but I loved Brenda. She isn’t just a pretty face this acting business is a job for her.  Her talent is admirable. Respect to her and the entire Festival of Creative Arts team.

We have a lot of creativity and Kenyans are bold, shout out to all Kenyans around the globe representing #TeamKenya.

Looking forward to meet more beautiful people in the next FCA play!
